Vintage Report 2009

Vintage Report 09 Pic 2“The defining vintage for the future viability of the Marlborough wine industry”.  I am not sure who to credit this quote but it made the start to this vintage a very nervous affair.

In our little corner of the province, very good rainfall in the Spring and early Summer meant that the soils were fairly moist and reduced the need for irrigation.  However, this also meant a series of botrytis infections during the late flowering early veraison period.   Then for the eight weeks leading up to vintage the rain just stopped and the sun shone brightly.

A sedate and orderly harvest began with the handpicking of the Pinot Gris on the 25th March and was all finished after a long wait for the Viognier on 22nd April.  In between we picked the Pinot Noir on 1st April and five parcels of Sauvignon blanc over the first week of April.  The result of this late reprieve means some very ripe, robust and flavourful grapes.  High sugar, high acid balanced young vine Sauvignon Blanc and the potential of the aromatics and the Pinot noir means the wine quality could verge on superb..Hmmm..no pressure Sam.
